Tomorrow is Team Green Britain Day

Just caught another of those TV ads telling me that tomorrow is “Team Green Britain Day”, so thought I’d better finally get round to visiting their website to find out exactly what it’s all about.

Sunday, 19th July, is just one of the events they’re encouraging people to organise to do their bit to reduce Britain’s carbon footprint in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. The idea behind the Big Lunch Event is, apparently, to get people out in the streets, having lunch with their neighbours and so building up the community spirit needed to make a difference to your local area. Extra brownie points if you grew the food you’re eating yourselves and tidy the place up a bit at the same time. Perhaps after the Big Lunch you might all then get together to form an Eco Team and learn together how to live a greener life.

Plus you could join a Team Energy and learn how to reduce the energy you use and your neighbours use (e.g. by inviting friends round to watch your TV instead of all watching their own sets). Or perhaps organise a ‘Bring and Swap’ party and swap your old unwanted stuff for other people’s old unwanted stuff, as part of a Team Swap. Or if you fancy a bit of exercise, there’s Team A to B: just leave your car at home, for journeys of less than 2 miles, and walk or cycle there instead.

UPDATE: To find out if a Big Lunch has been organised near you, just visit thebiglunch.com and enter your postcode.

Rent Out Your Unwanted Stuff — New Website

We’ve mentioned before the umpteen, green ways you can get rid of your unwanted items (e.g. give them away, sell them on, recycle them) but how about renting them out?

That’s what the new website RentNotBuy.co.uk is suggesting. The site is free to use and has already attracted a darn sight more media interest than I’ve ever managed.

Apologies for the downtime

My apologies for the absence of the Green Bargains Blog for the last few days.

I have no idea why the site has been down as it’s hosted via a Master Reseller account from Kryptonitehost.com who’ve understandably been too busy trying to get their site, as well as their customers, back up to email or otherwise tell us what’s happened. (And it took me a while to remember what those error messages meant, that were stopping me from logging in to the site to post this apology.)

I’m waiting to hear from our host as to whether or not they can restore the hotdvdbargainsblog.co.uk website or not whilst simultaneously looking to see how upto date a version I could restore myself as I’ve been rather lax taking back up copies of it (let that be a lesson to you all!).

And may I take this opportunity to say hello to our new followers on our Twitter feed: twitter.com/greenbargainsbl

Goodbye Pligg, welcome back to our Blog (Sticky Post)

Welcome back to the Green Bargains Blog. The software we’d been using to power the site’s frontend was called ‘Pligg’ and just didn’t seem to be suited to our site’s needs so I’ve reinstated our old WordPress blog as our main, and sole, site.

WordPress is more user friendly and lets you easily add images to your posts. And you can now post to the blog (although because of the recent rash of spam on the old Pligg, posts will have to be approved before they appear) — so if you find any Green Bargains, News or Tips of your own please do share them with us.

A similar spam problem led me to remove the Write on Our Wall widget from the sidebar but I’ve been able to rescue the few real submissions that were made by transferring them as comments to this post. And as we’re now using our own, bespoke WordPress theme, do feel free to add any issues you have with the site or suggesti improvements.

Oh, and by the way, our comments system (and the post information box below) now support Gravatars. Visit www.gravatar.com to learn more about them.

Thinking of buying a new TV?

Thinking of buying a new TV? The website, ee-tv.org, sets out to show that not all TVs are created equal when it comes to their energy efficiency or eco-friendliness and they provide a 5 step guide to buying your new set.

The site also contains facts & figures about the energy efficiency of the varying types of TVs (e.g. CRT, LCD, Plasma), a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, information on EU legislation, and lots of useful links to further information. Plus a very handy calculator to work out how much your TV is costing you to run per year.

And to save even more money on your electricity bill, why not buy one of these Standby Saver Energy Saving Unit AS SEEN ON DRAGONS DEN (For use with TV’s, Hi Fi’s etc – also available for use with PC’s and Accessories) from Amazon UK.

Site issues now solved

Our apologies to anyone who found the site down last night. I understand our web host was doing emergency updates to the servers.

And when I tried to check the forum I found myself facing a blank page in both IE7 and Firefox Portable. This seems to be a common quirk of forum (& pligg) software and was easily solved by deleting files from the forum’s cache folder but probably meant that anyone visiting the site in the last few hours wouldn’t have been able to access the forum. Our apologies again.

Everything should now be back to normal but do let us know if it isn’t.

Find DVD Bargains on Our Forum

Whilst we’re happy for people to post any DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray bargains they find here on our blog, people looking for such bargains may prefer to go directly to our “DVD Bargains, Bargains, Bargains” forum where they’ll find many more such bargains listed (including overseas bargains) and pick up useful tips and information relating to buying DVDs. Plus all posts made here have their own automatically generated thread in the “Bargains from Our Blog” section where people can leave their own comments or ask questions relating to the post.

Or if you’d just like to see our forum in full, to discuss Green topics, or just to chat and hang out, then just visit: http://greenbargainsblog.com/gbforum/
